Art 629 owner Patrick Schiavino is a prime example of that spirit at work, and joined by movers and shakers like APVibe, Asbury Free Radio and the Collective Art Tank the result is ASBURY PARK UNDERGROUND – which is anything but under-handed, but rather a high-minded concept to meld the fine arts of Asbury Park with its musical heritage.
They write to Asbury Pulp, “Asbury Park is already known as “the city where music lives”, but it is quickly becoming New Jersey’s number one destination for the fine arts as well. On Saturday afternoon, September 28th, the two art forms will collide as Cookman Ave will resonate with a series of free, acoustic pop-up sets by ten critically acclaimed musicians who live and work in the ‘City by the Sea’, taking place at ten art galleries along what is becoming the super chic Cookman Avenue.”
Pulp has been privvy to some of the inner-workings of the group and we can report that they have been working hard for some time to launch make ‘Underground’ soar above. Networking, collaboration and imagination are the fuel which fire what is likely to become the next big happening day and night on Saturday, September 28 – and whenever else Asbury Underground chooses to rear its head.
Kicking off at Kiss My Art Gallery at 1:00pm, the inaugural “Music and Art Walk” will wind its way through 10 Downtown art galleries before ending the evening at Parlor Gallery. Rather than a “guided tour” the organizers have designed ASBURY UNDERGROUND as a casual, no-frills event which encourages everyone to explore the Downtown with maps of participating venues and with special discounts offered at local participating retail stores.
In the official kick-off release, Schiavino states, “Asbury Park has a long tradition as being the premier destination for original music here in the State, but what most people are unaware of, is that it is quickly becoming one of the most concentrated areas for the fine arts as well, and on the 28th, we will be joining the two art forms together in what I hope will bring a broader awareness of just how fertile in all of the arts our City is.”
And let’s give two cheers to fertile imaginations, too.

- Asbury Underground is sponsored by APVibe, Art 629, and Asbury Free Radio, as well as Liquitex Artist Materials and the Collective Art Tank, who will host street art demonstrations during the event by their internationally supported stable of artists. The resulting works of the Liquitex project will be on display at Art 629 in late October.
